Six sheets, without a single chip cut
Use the initial geometry exercise: a 25 × 13-inch surface, one-inch square chips, twelve columns and twelve rows per sheet, no joints and a corner start. Each sheet face is twelve inches square. The surface needs three sheet positions across and two down: six source sheets.
Two sheets remain complete. Four lose rows, columns or both, yet every retained chip stays one inch square. The result is 325 whole chips and zero chip cuts. Those four trims are classified as backing-only. Four sheets per box gives two boxes, containing eight sheets: six sources and two carton extras.
Half an inch changes the cutting work
Increase only the width to 25½ inches. The source count stays at six, but the last chip column now contains thirteen half-width pieces. The inventory becomes 338 retained chips, including thirteen cuts. Choosing the lower whole-chip width restores 25 inches; the upper choice uses 26. Neither is an instruction to alter a finished wall.
Derive the face before adding a seam
A sheet with twelve chip columns contains eleven internal vertical joints. Its width is twelve chip widths plus eleven joints. Only after that face ends does the seam between sheets begin. Measuring loose mesh extending past the last chip as if it were tile face would enlarge the repeat incorrectly.
For a metric check, take two-by-two chips, each 10 mm square, with 2 mm internal joints. The sheet face is 22 × 22 mm. A 4 mm seam makes the repeat 26 mm. Across a 50 mm surface, two sheets end at 48 mm, leaving the final two millimetres in the gap region. The adjacent intact-chip endpoints are 48 and 62 mm.
What “backing only” actually establishes
The boundary misses every retained chip interior. That is a geometric fact about the entered grid, not a cutting instruction for paper, film or mesh. A tiny variation in the factory spacing can move a proposed line onto a chip. Inspect a physical sheet before preparing repeated strips.

Keep leftovers attached to their source
The order deliberately does not exchange remnants between sheets. This makes every displayed chip traceable to a specific source. Reusing a strip can reduce purchases, but requires a separate check of its chip rows, dimensions, orientation and remaining mounting support. The unused-material figure counts chip faces left over, including untouched chips, rather than pretending the entire sheet rectangle was solid tile.

Mosaic measuring questions
How do I calculate a mosaic made from sheets?
Count the columns and rows on one sheet, measure a chip face and its internal joint, then enter the surface dimensions. The tool derives the sheet face and positions complete source sheets. It then checks the individual chips inside each sheet against the surface boundary.
How many mosaic tiles should I buy?
First decide whether the supplier sells loose chips or mounted sheets. This purchase ledger orders sheets, with chips listed underneath for cutting. A partial sheet still consumes one source sheet here; reserve and carton rounding are added afterward. Loose mosaic art needs a different estimate.
Can I just divide the surface area by the sheet area?
That estimates coverage, but it does not retain the shapes of the leftovers. A narrow strip can intersect many sheets while occupying little area. Dividing areas also cannot tell you whether its boundary lands between two chips or through a chip face.
How much space should I leave between mosaic tiles?
Use the instructions and measured spacing for your selected product. Internal joints already exist within a mounted sheet. The seam field controls the gap between adjacent sheet faces. They are separate inputs so a different seam does not silently change every internal joint.
How do I use square feet for a mosaic project?
Enter the width and height in inches or with explicit feet, such as 10 ft. The result reports square feet, but both dimensions remain necessary to position the sheets. Square footage alone cannot define which sheet edge needs trimming.
Can this mosaic calculator work in square metres?
Switch to metric for square-metre areas and millimetre dimensions. You can also type 2.4 m or 24 cm directly into a length field. Existing entries convert when you change systems; the chip row and column counts remain whole numbers.
Is there a mosaic layout app for my phone?
This planner runs in the browser and has a sheet-level drawing followed by a magnified chip view. Tap a sheet or select its table row to change that view. Save the exports if you need a record; the page does not store an account-based project.
Can I download the mosaic cut list for free?
The chip CSV, full sheet drawing and selected-sheet SVG are available without a login. CSV contains every retained chip, including its source-sheet identifier and local dimensions in millimetres. Print includes the current sheet detail alongside the order and sheet inventory.
Why can two equal square-foot areas use different numbers of sheets?
Their widths and heights can cross different numbers of sheet positions. The orientation and start also determine whether a small remainder appears on one boundary or both. This model does not pool disconnected remnants into a theoretical full sheet.
Does the planner only accept square mosaic tiles?
No. Chip width and height can differ, as can the sheet’s number of columns and rows. The chips must still form a uniform straight rectangular grid. Staggered brick sheets, penny rounds, pebbles and hexagonal interlocking sheets are outside this geometry.
Is the m² result tile face area or installed coverage?
Surface area includes the rectangle you entered. Tile face area counts only retained chips; joint area is the usable field minus those faces. The latter is a two-dimensional gap area, not a grout-bag quantity, because grout depth and product density are absent.
What formula connects chips, sheets and boxes?
Sheet width is columns times chip width plus the internal joints between columns. Sheet height follows the same rule. The next sheet starts one seam beyond that face. Geometric sheet positions supply the source count; your spare percentage and sheets per box determine the final order.
Limits of the chip grid
- Uniform rectangular chips in aligned rectangular sheets only. Irregular tesserae, interlocking boundaries and decorative arrangements cannot be represented by row and column counts.
- No openings, curves, slope, changes in thickness, grout depth or material suitability assessment.
- Sheet bounds can include a partial joint at the perimeter. Joint area is not a recommendation to fill movement clearances with grout.
- Nearest endpoint choices assume a top-left corner start and preserve your perimeter clearances. They do not optimize a centered arrangement.
- One source sheet per position; no offcut credit, saw kerf allowance or assumption that mesh can survive a particular trim.
- Up to thirty rows and columns per sheet, 2,500 source sheet positions and 100,000 retained chips. Split larger work into measured sections.
