A waterline order starts with the perimeter
For a 30 × 15-foot rectangle, the four runs total 90 linear feet. A six-inch band gives 45 square feet of surface. The PoolTile measurement guide distinguishes this narrow band from the walls and bottom of the entire basin. Measuring the pool floor would answer a different question.
In the zero-joint example, six-inch square tiles fit sixty along each long wall and thirty along each short wall: 180 source tiles. A ten-percent reserve adds eighteen. With twenty pieces per box, ten boxes contain 200 tiles, leaving two beyond the source count and reserve. None of those example inputs establishes a product requirement.
A single extra inch can add a course
Raise the example band from six to seven inches. Its area increases modestly, but it now crosses two tile courses on every wall. Without sharing the one-inch strips between source tiles, the count becomes 360 blanks. The course comparison offers six or twelve inches for this zero-joint case, showing the quantity associated with each height.
Joints also occupy height. Two six-inch courses separated by a one-eighth-inch joint span 12⅛ inches, not twelve. There is no extra joint above the first course or below the last in that expression. Any separate top or bottom detail belongs outside the entered tile-band height.
Keep the corners in the run measurements
Label the walls A through D in order, starting each at the next corner. A corner exclusion of two inches removes two inches from each adjoining wall; it does not remove a two-inch square from a plan view. You can reserve that space for a separately specified detail without silently treating it as ordinary field tile.
As an arithmetic check, use corner exclusions of one, two, three and four inches in sequence. The two long walls become 357 and 353 inches; the short walls each become 175 inches. Their total is 1,060 inches, twenty less than the original perimeter. Every corner contributes twice, once to each wall it touches.
Locate the skimmer rather than subtracting a guess
Enable the sample opening: twelve inches wide and six inches high, twelve inches from wall A’s first corner. At zero joint width, it removes two whole tile positions. The source total falls from 180 to 178 tiles. No tiles are added inside the opening; its throat and returns require a separate detail.
A small opening behaves differently. Put a two-inch square opening thirteen inches from the corner and one inch below the band top. It lies within a single six-inch tile. The remaining portions still use that source, so the total stays at 180. The selected-piece text and CSV describe the fragments instead of pretending their bounding rectangle is the cut shape.

Waterline measuring questions
How many square feet are in a waterline band?
Multiply the perimeter measured at the band by its height in the same units. A 90-foot perimeter and half-foot band give 45 square feet before exclusions. This is the band surface, including its grout spaces, not the pool’s horizontal floor area.
Can this calculate every tiled surface in my pool?
No. It follows four flat walls through one continuous band height. Basin floors, submerged steps, benches, attached spas and coping are separate surfaces. Adding their areas to this band would lose the wall-by-wall cutting information.
Can the waterline quantities be shown in square metres?
Use metric to convert the dimensions and results. The tile count should remain unchanged. Measurements with a suffix, such as 9 m or 150 mm, are also accepted without converting them yourself.
Does a 30 × 15-foot pool have 450 square feet of waterline?
That number is the rectangular floor projection. Its perimeter is 90 feet, so a six-inch waterline band is 45 square feet. The two areas refer to different surfaces and cannot be substituted for one another.
Does the calculator choose the best tile for a pool waterline?
It does not rate materials. Supply the dimensions of a product approved for the intended pool exposure and installation system. A mathematically correct quantity cannot establish suitability for submersion, the substrate or local conditions.
Can a taller tile band correct an unlevel pool?
The model assumes a level, constant-height band. It does not assess the shell, coping or water level, and its course comparison is not a repair recommendation. Uneven levels require site-specific evaluation before setting out the band.
Where should I start laying the waterline tiles?
Use the corner-start and centered options to compare the geometric result, then choose the actual setting-out line with the installation plan. Each wall restarts independently here; the tool does not continue a decorative motif or a grout offset around a corner.
Does this decide whether my pool needs waterline tile?
No. It estimates a band once that finish has been chosen. It does not replace the pool’s finish specification, waterproofing details or requirements for the selected construction system.
Can I test a taller decorative waterline band?
Change the band height to any supported positive dimension. The course table also offers nearby heights made from whole tile courses and intervening joints. Selecting a row recalculates all four walls and the opening intersection.
Can I estimate a waterline replacement?
Measure the actual exposed runs and replacement height after allowing for the planned corner details. This quantity does not include demolition, substrate repair or matching an old tile batch. For a short local repair, use the individual run dimensions in the general tile planner.
How many 6 × 6-inch tiles fit along the waterline?
At zero joint width, two fit in each linear foot of a six-inch-high band. That simple check changes when actual tile size, joints, corners or openings change. The initial zero-joint case is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation to butt the tiles together.
Can I use the result for a fiberglass pool?
Only as a geometric count for the measured band. It does not specify bonding, preparation, movement accommodation or compatibility with fiberglass. Confirm those details with the tile and installation-system suppliers before interpreting the plan as an order.
Scope of the four-wall model
- One rectangular pool, flat walls, a constant band height and individual rectangular tiles in straight courses.
- No curved corners, mosaic-sheet strip reuse, cove units, coping, steps, sloped floors or attached spas.
- The opening removes its intersection with the usable band only. No skimmer throat, internal returns or waterproofing detail is generated.
- Each wall has an independent restart. Decorative-pattern continuity, mitred corners and offcut reuse are outside the model.
- Area includes joints; dimensions are geometric. Pool exposure ratings, installation tolerances and material suitability must come from the selected system.
