Coordinates refer to the source’s original left end. A finishing piece retains the left factory end; its remaining right-end tail may start another row. Make the crosscut before ripping the installed segment so the unused tail retains the original board width.
Use an inventory, not an average board
A shipment containing short and long hardwood pieces cannot be represented by one average length. The average removes the exact ends that determine where seams land. Two stocks with the same total area can produce different cut schedules, untouched pieces and joint conflicts.
This calculator starts with equal installed widths and three measured length groups. The initial example contains four sixty-inch boards and two fifty-inch boards. The third group is available for a thirty-five-inch length but has zero pieces until you enter a count. None of those dimensions describes a retailer’s carton.
Check the small example by hand
The starting field is one hundred inches long in the board direction and twenty inches across. Ten-inch-wide boards create two rows. With checks disabled and reuse off, each row takes a sixty-inch board followed by forty inches cut from a fifty-inch board.
Four sources therefore supply four placed pieces, while two sixty-inch boards remain untouched. A one-eighth-inch crosscut leaves a 9⅞-inch tail from each fifty-inch source. The model reports both tails separately from the cutting loss. The two end joints align at sixty inches; entering a positive joint-spacing requirement exposes that arrangement for review.
Understand the selection rule before relying on it
At each position, the planner considers unused boards. At a row start it may also consider an eligible existing tail. It first prefers candidates that avoid an adjacent-joint violation, then those that meet your minimum piece length and avoid a two-row alignment.
Among equally ranked candidates, it favors an eligible tail, then less immediate trimming, then a longer piece. Source identifiers break any remaining tie. These are local decisions: the calculator does not rearrange earlier rows when a later choice is poor. A visually better or less wasteful solution may exist.
Changing the joint threshold can change which length gets consumed next. It is not simply a label attached after calculating an area. Nevertheless, if all available choices violate the threshold, the planner can place a violating piece and show the conflict rather than claiming that the rule has been satisfied.
Retain the useful factory end
A leftover with a sound right factory end can become a starter with its sawn end against the boundary. This model does not move that tail into the middle of a row or recreate a missing tongue or groove. It does not turn the board over to make a joint appear compatible.
The tail must fit the row run and meet the entered minimum piece length. It is used at its remaining length, without a further shortening cut. If your product’s profile, damage or fastening requirements make a tail unsuitable, leave reuse off or remove that board from the counted stock before planning.
Interpret an unfilled area carefully
When no candidate remains for a position, the plan leaves a dashed empty rectangle. That area is an unresolved part of this racking attempt, not a recommendation to buy an identical area of arbitrary hardwood. Additional short stock may still leave different seams from a smaller number of long boards.
A complete drawing is likewise only geometric coverage. Check the joint findings and piece lengths. The software does not account for rejected faces, grain direction preferences, damaged ends, color distribution or the fastening method. Those decisions can reduce the inventory actually available for installation.
Separate width patterns from length inventory
This tool uses one common width. A three-width alternating pattern needs a different row allocation and a separate inventory for each width. The fact that a supplier can divide square footage among widths does not establish an executable sequence of individual board lengths.

Save the schedule before changing the stock
The CSV includes group totals, placed pieces, source coordinates and unresolved floor rectangles. Keep a copy beside the measured inventory. If the delivered boards differ from the planned lengths, update the inputs and regenerate the schedule; changing one count may alter several later source assignments.
Questions about a hardwood takeoff
How do I calculate the hardwood needed?
Start with the clear installation field and actual installed board width. This planner also needs the number of boards at each measured length. It racks that finite stock, records every cut and reports any area left unfilled. A room-area estimate alone cannot provide those source assignments.
What does hardwood cost for a 2,000-square-foot house?
Species, grade, product construction, preparation and installation method can change the quote. A house area also hides separate installation fields. Obtain a supplier and installer estimate; this inventory planner does not assign a national dollar rate or extrapolate a small room’s offcuts to a whole house.
Can I estimate installation for 1,000 square feet here?
This tool addresses board use, not installer productivity or labor pricing. Use its schedule to explain the material assumptions behind a quote. Site preparation, fastening, adhesive and finishing charges need their own measured scope and current local prices.
How much extra stock should I add to 1,000 square feet?
No single reserve percentage describes every inventory. Short boards, edge cuts, rejected faces and future repair stock have different effects. This planner consumes only the boards entered, then exposes untouched boards and unfilled floor. It does not turn a failed layout into an automatic percentage order.
Why does the square-foot total not establish a usable plan?
Equal areas can be made up of very different lengths. End joints may align, small finish pieces may remain, and a useful factory-ended offcut may sit on another source board. The drawing and source table retain information that an area total discards.
Is the hardwood cutting schedule free?
Yes. The full inventory, placed-piece list and source coordinates can be printed or exported without payment. Save the CSV before leaving the page because this version has no persistent project account.
Can I use a laminate carton instead?
If all boards are identical, the general flooring planner has a simpler carton-based workflow. This tool is useful when you have actually counted different lengths. It cannot infer a laminate package’s internal mix from its advertised coverage.
Does it import Home Depot hardwood products?
No. Enter the measured stock you have or a length schedule the supplier has explicitly confirmed. A listing that gives only minimum and maximum lengths does not establish how many boards of each length arrive in a carton.
Can B&Q measurements be entered in metric?
Yes. Switch to metric and enter millimetres for every length, including source boards and saw kerf. Counts remain whole boards. This is a geometry feature, not a link to the retailer’s catalog or a claim that a particular product is stocked.
What makes this different from the general flooring tool?
The general planner repeats a single plank size and calculates cartons. This one draws from a finite length inventory and can run out. It also records which source tail moves to a later row. Both tools share the same measurement conventions.
Can I multiply used area by a square-foot price?
That may describe a material subtotal only if the supplier sells the same measured stock on that basis. It will not necessarily match packaged purchases, minimum orders or the delivery invoice. Keep untouched inventory, installation charges and tax outside a simple installed-area multiplication.
Is there a random-layout app mode?
The racking rule is deterministic so a schedule can be reproduced. It favors available candidates according to joint spacing, short-piece checks, H alignments and cut usage. It is not a visual randomizer, color sorter or global optimization search.
What this racking attempt cannot settle
- One rectangular field, one installed width, up to 2,000 counted full boards and 2,500 placed pieces. No stair, island or diagonal geometry.
- Length groups describe measured stock, not a probability distribution for unopened random-length cartons.
- Local selection can miss a better arrangement. A shortage is not proof of global infeasibility; a filled field is not installation approval.
- No color sorting, grade rejection, moisture analysis, fastener layout, adhesive quantity or labor quotation.
- Tail reuse assumes compatible opposite factory ends and crosscutting before ripping. Confirm physical profiles before cutting.
