The area-only column ignores seams and whether the remaining material is long enough. Rotation changes the strip lengths and the number cut from each roll. Confirm the permitted direction before adopting a numerically smaller order.

A narrow final band still starts from full-width roll stock. The schedule does not promise that the long side offcut can become another compliant strip. Cut and label each destination before assuming a leftover is reusable elsewhere.

Why one hundred square feet can require two rolls

Consider the starting ten-foot square with a hypothetical four-foot-wide roll that is twenty-five feet long. Its label area would be one hundred square feet, exactly matching the room. Yet the room needs three ten-foot strips when seams run parallel to either wall.

Only two of those strips fit in the first roll: twenty feet are used and five remain. The third strip needs a second roll, leaving fifteen feet of uncut length there. Its finished width is two feet, so half its width is also trimmed. All those scraps have area; none changes the requirement for three continuous ten-foot lengths in this model.

Follow the overlap through the drawing

Side overlap reduces the advance between strips. A forty-eight-inch membrane with an eight-inch overlap advances forty inches after the first strip. Across a 120-inch room, the strips begin at zero, forty and eighty inches. The last strip is forty inches wide, including the lap over its neighbor.

The two eight-inch overlaps each run ten feet, consuming thirteen and one-third square feet beyond the substrate. This is separate from any additional length at the strip ends. The transparent overlap bands in the drawing show material doubled at the joins, rather than a gap in coverage.

End allowance changes the source cuts

If your instructions require material beyond the room at both ends, enter that extension per end. The cut length becomes the room run plus twice the allowance. A roll that previously supplied two strips may then supply only one. The drawing shows the horizontal substrate footprint; the cut table includes the extra length outside it.

There is no saw kerf for roll goods in this model. If the material requires damaged ends to be discarded, enter the remaining usable roll length after trimming. Width should likewise describe usable stock. Do not count a projecting adhesive tab as coverage unless the product instructions establish that it contributes to the installed width.

Keep the membrane independent

A cushion roll and a separate membrane may have different widths, lengths and joining rules. Enter them separately even if a merchant sells both as “underlayment.” Changing cushion dimensions must not change the membrane count. Where a combined product performs both functions, do not automatically order a duplicate separate layer.

The example overlap button loads only the documented value from the linked guide. It does not select a substrate, enable the membrane or approve a moisture-control system. The calculator has no moisture test, adhesion check or assessment of the existing floor. Layer selection remains a decision made from the applicable installation documents.

Read the plank order on its own terms

The plank plan uses a repeating thirds sequence and balances the outer row widths. Boundary clearance reduces the plank field on all four sides, while roll layers continue across the gross substrate. Each visible plank has a source identifier, including short end pieces. This page conservatively gives every placed piece its own blank.

For an explicit starter-to-end offcut pairing schedule, use the general flooring planner. Here the focus is reconciling the laminate pieces with independent roll layers. The joint table still measures the nearest seams between adjacent rows and flags separations below your entered threshold.

A failed direction is useful information

If one strip would exceed the usable roll length, that option is unavailable. Turning the strips through ninety degrees may produce a workable schedule. If both options fail, change the stock or establish an approved transverse-joint detail outside this calculator. Silently cutting a strip into arbitrary segments would produce a purchase quantity without a justified installation plan.

Multiple rooms, fixed islands and angled recesses need separate measured fields and a later stock reconciliation. This page does not combine scraps between rooms or optimize an entire house. Preserve the exported schedules so a supplier or installer can see which assumptions produced each carton and roll quantity.

Laminate ordering questions

How do I figure out the laminate quantity?

Enter the room and plank dimensions, then inspect the cuts before ordering. Here each placed piece consumes one source plank; the optional reserve is added before rounding to cartons. Roll layers have their own cutting schedules and are not estimated as a percentage of plank stock.

What will installing 2,000 square feet cost?

A whole-house figure cannot establish subfloor preparation, room transitions or local labor. Obtain an itemized installer quote. This page supplies quantities for one rectangular field and intentionally does not multiply a national installation rate by your area.

How much laminate does a 10-by-10 room need?

That is the default 120-by-120-inch room. With the example 48-by-8-inch planks, zero clearance and thirds sequence, it contains 15 rows and 50 placed pieces. Eight planks per carton means seven cartons before any additional replacement allowance. The dimensions are an exercise, not a product recommendation.

How many square feet does a carton cover?

Use the actual package label. This planner requires the count of identical planks per carton because it purchases source pieces. Multiplying their installed faces gives the modeled carton area, which may differ from a rounded label or from nominal plank measurements.

Why can the roll order exceed the square-foot estimate?

Enough area does not guarantee enough uninterrupted strips. Roll width, usable length, overlaps and end allowances constrain the cuts. The orientation table exposes the gap between the area-only minimum and rolls that can actually supply this schedule.

Can I download this laminate calculation free?

The combined CSV includes plank pieces and roll strips with source coordinates. Export the currently displayed layer as SVG, or print all schedules. No account or email address is required.

Can I enter a B&Q laminate package?

Yes, if it contains uniform fixed-size planks. Switch to metric, use millimetres for dimensions and enter the plank count. This is a user-entered package calculation; no B&Q product stock or prices are imported.

Which square-foot number should I use for the layers?

The layer plan covers the full rectangular substrate. The laminate field is smaller when boundary clearance is entered. Neither quantity is the property’s advertised floor area. A membrane turn-up, if required, must also be entered as an end allowance.

Will a Home Depot underlay roll work?

Enter that roll’s width and usable length, then follow its joining instructions. A package coverage figure alone is insufficient for a continuous-strip schedule. Integrated moisture protection and adhesive flaps may change which dimensions and overlaps are appropriate.

Can these layers be used for vinyl flooring too?

The strip arithmetic is material-independent, but permitted assemblies are product-specific. This laminate example does not approve an underlay beneath vinyl. Consult the vinyl instructions, and use the general plank planner for its row geometry.

Does the calculator find laminate near me?

No. It produces an order schedule from your measurements rather than checking store inventory. Take the source counts and product instructions to your chosen supplier, and verify that every purchased carton and roll matches the entered dimensions.

How many boxes fit the same plan in a 12-by-12 room?

At 144 inches in both directions, the example 48-by-8-inch plank and thirds sequence produce 66 placed pieces. With eight per carton and no reserve, that rounds to nine cartons. A different plank, clearance or carton count changes the result.

Boundaries of this assembly plan

  • One rectangle; uniform planks; axis-aligned roll strips; no doorway, pipe, staircase or island cutouts.
  • No transverse seams, folded corners, pattern matching or reuse of longitudinal roll rips. End allowance applies only along each strip’s length.
  • Zero overlap and clearance defaults are arithmetic examples, not universal installation values.
  • No product compatibility, substrate flatness, moisture testing or warranty approval. Confirm the selected layers and joining method separately.
  • Maximum 2,500 pieces or strips per layer. Rounded display dimensions do not change the underlying millimetre coordinates.
