Grams appear only when both densities are entered. Fluid ounces and millilitres always appear. A batch limit smaller than the kit produces more, smaller batches; the purchase does not change.
Why a primer at half solids uses as much liquid as a base coat
Take the example bay, 20 by 20 feet, 400 square feet. The base coat targets 10 mils dry at 100 percent solids. One gallon spread at one mil with nothing evaporating covers 1,604 square feet, because a US gallon is 231 cubic inches and a mil is a thousandth of an inch. At 10 mils that is 160.4 square feet per gallon, so the floor needs 2.49 gallons of film; a 10 percent loss allowance makes 2.74, and one 3-gallon kit covers it with 0.26 gallon unused.
The example primer targets only 4 mils dry, but at 50 percent volume solids the wet film must be 8 mils, and the liquid needed is 1.99 gallons before loss, 2.09 after. Two 1.5-gallon kits are bought and 0.91 gallon stays unused. The 3-mil topcoat at 70 percent solids spreads 4.3 mils wet, 1.07 gallons of film and 1.18 with loss, two 1-gallon kits. Across the three coats the purchase is 8 gallons in five kits for a 17-mil dry system, 66.5 square feet per gallon of practical volume.
The batch card is the on-site document
The base coat’s largest batch is set to 1.5 gallons, so its 2.74 gallons split into two batches of 1.37. Mixed 2 to 1 by volume, each batch is 3,461 millilitres of part A and 1,730 of part B, 117.0 and 58.5 fluid ounces. With the example densities of 1.10 and 0.95 grams per millilitre those parts weigh 3,807 and 1,644 grams, a ratio by weight of 2.32 to 1, not 2 to 1. Mixing by weight at the volume ratio would under-dose the hardener.
The map divides the floor length into equal bands: two bands of 10 feet for the base coat, each 200 square feet, each covered by one batch. When the largest batch is left at zero, one kit is one batch; the primer then shows two batches because it needs two kits.

Four of the seven apply one product’s coverage rate to square feet and round to that product’s container. Two compute a plain volume from area and thickness, which is the base coat arithmetic without solids or kits. TotalBoat’s 576 cubic inches for 400 square feet at 10 mils equals 2.494 gallons, the same figure this page derives, which is the check that the gallon basis is right. None of them prints a wet-film reading, a batch card by weight, or a map of what each batch covers.
What the loss allowance is not
Loss covers what stays in the bucket, on the roller and in the profile of a ground slab. It is not a waste percentage carried from plank flooring, and the page does not suggest a value: data sheets and the slab decide. Whole-kit rounding is reported separately as unused volume, so a small loss allowance and a large kit are not confused with each other.
Flakes are broadcast by weight per area, and bags are bought whole. A heavy broadcast usually thickens the topcoat the vendor recommends; enter that coat’s own dry film and solids rather than a generic rate. Questions from the mixing station
How is the epoxy quantity calculated here?
Per coat: wet film equals the dry film target divided by volume solids; wet volume equals floor area times wet film, converted at 231 cubic inches per gallon. A loss allowance is added, the result rounds up to whole kits, and the practical volume is split into batches no larger than the limit you enter.
How much epoxy does a 1,000-square-foot floor need?
It depends on the dry film and solids of each coat. At 10 mils and 100 percent solids one coat needs 6.23 gallons before loss; at 5 mils and 50 percent solids a primer needs the same liquid volume. Enter 1,000 square feet with your data sheet values and read the kits per coat.
How many gallons for 1,000 square feet in one number?
One gallon at one mil and full solids covers 1,604 square feet, so gallons equal square feet times dry mils divided by 1,604 and by the solids fraction. For 1,000 square feet at 10 mils that is 6.23 gallons, 6.86 with 10 percent loss, before kit rounding. The page shows the sum across coats.
What does a 1,500-square-foot epoxy floor cost?
This page does not price coatings. It gives kits per coat and bags of flakes, which you multiply by your supplier quotes. Labor, grinding, crack repair and moisture testing depend on the slab and the region; a per-square-foot cost figure hides all of that.
Is there a cost per square foot output?
No. The output that compares products is square feet per gallon of the whole system, derived from your coats. Two kits at different prices cover different areas; divide each quote by its coverage on this page before comparing. The flooring cost calculator handles priced ledgers for plank floors.
Can I enter square feet directly instead of two sides?
The band map needs the floor length to divide it into batch strips, so enter width and length. If you only know the area, enter the true length and set the width to area divided by length; the gallons are identical, only the band depth changes.
Does it calculate resin and hardener in grams?
Yes, when you enter the density of each part from the data sheet. Each batch lists part A and part B in millilitres, fluid ounces and grams, and the ratio by weight is derived from the ratio by volume. Without densities the weight columns stay empty rather than guessing.
Does it give the volumes in millilitres?
Every batch shows millilitres and fluid ounces for both parts, and the CSV keeps millilitres for the purchased volume per coat. Switching to metric changes kit sizes and totals to litres; the dry film stays in mils because data sheets state it that way, with 1 mil equal to 25.4 microns.
Is this the same as a general epoxy calculator?
A general epoxy calculator multiplies area by thickness to get a volume. This floor version adds volume solids, loss, whole kits per coat, batch limits, densities and a floor map of what each batch covers. For a river table or a casting, a plain volume tool is enough.
Is the epoxy floor calculator free to use?
Yes. Print the plan, download the coat and batch CSV, or export the band map as SVG. There is no account, email step or product catalog; the preloaded values are exercises to overwrite with a technical data sheet.
Is there an app version?
The page runs in the browser after loading and works on a phone at the mixing station. Nothing is saved to an account, so export the batch card before closing the tab. Values can be re-entered in metric on site if the data sheet is in litres.
Can I use it with a Canadian kit in litres?
Switch to metric. Kit size and largest batch become litres, the floor is entered in millimetres, flakes in kilograms per square metre and bags in kilograms. The coverage arithmetic is unit-independent; only the display changes.
What the batch card does not decide
- One rectangle, up to three coats, equal batches. No pot-life clock, recoat window, temperature correction or moisture test.
- All film, solids, loss, kit, ratio, density and broadcast values come from you; the preloaded numbers are exercises.
- Bands are drawn along the floor length only. Working sequence, wet-edge time and exit path are the applicator’s plan.
- Grams depend on the densities you enter; no default density is assumed for any product.
- No prices. Kits and bags multiply by your own quotes.
