York’s calculator page is a chart: bolts of 20.5 inches by 33 feet for seventeen room sizes, 56 square feet each, one bolt off for every four doors. Its product pages carry a different tool that counts strips. This page cuts the drops on the bolt or on the product roll, rounds them to the repeat, sets them on 33 feet of paper, and prints the chart’s figure and the product calculator’s figure beside the count.

The chart rounds the area quotient to the nearest bolt, so 5.14 prints as 5 and 7.7 as 7. The drop columns use the bolt or product width chosen above and the repeat and match entered; the last column adds the trim. Every room on the chart needs more bolts by drops than by chart at 9 feet, because a 9-foot cut leaves 72 inches of a 33-foot bolt that cannot become a fourth drop.

Five bolts on the chart, eight on the wall
The chart’s first room is 8 by 10 feet. At an 8-foot ceiling it lists 5 bolts: 36 feet of perimeter times 8 feet is 288 square feet, 5.14 bolts of 56, rounded to the nearest. Cut in drops, the 8-foot walls take five drops of 20.5 inches each and the 10-foot walls six, twenty-two drops. With no trim a drop is 96 inches and a 33-foot bolt, 396 inches, holds four: six bolts. With 4 inches of trim a drop is 100 inches, the bolt holds three, and the room takes eight. York’s product calculator, given 36 feet and 8 feet on the 20.9-inch Elijah roll, returns six: it takes the width as one 432-inch run, 21 strips, four per roll, no trim.
Raise the ceiling to 9 feet and the chart says six. A 108-inch drop fits three times in 396 inches whether or not a trim is added, so the twenty-two drops need eight bolts, and the product calculator, 21 strips at three per roll, says seven. The 72 inches left on every bolt at 9 feet are the difference between the chart and the wall, and no rounding rule recovers them.
Doors, and the strip above the door
Give the room two doors and two windows, four ordinary openings. The chart takes one bolt off: four. The product calculator removes one strip for each opening that spans a roll width, 36 inches over 20.9 gives one, so 21 strips become 17 and six rolls become five. The drop plan keeps eight, because each of those openings sits inside a drop that still runs from ceiling to floor around it; the piece above a door is a cut, shorter, from the same bolt. Where an opening genuinely spans whole drops, the general calculator places it and splits the drop into pieces.

The Liora product carries a 20.87-inch straight repeat. Its 8-foot drop with trim, 100 inches, rounds to 104.35, and a bolt still holds three; York’s calculator rounds the bare 96 inches to the same 104.35, which is how its “larger repeats require more rolls” becomes a number: 22 drops at three per roll are eight double rolls, $1,040 at the list price read, against six rolls and $720 for the Elijah texture with no repeat and no trim.

Questions before the bolts are ordered
How do I work out how much York wallpaper I need?
Count the drops: each wall width divided by the roll width, 20.5 inches for the chart’s bolt or 20.9 for the products read, rounded up. Cut each drop to the wall height plus a trim allowance, rounded to the repeat when the paper has one, and see how many cuts 33 feet of bolt holds. Bolts are the drops divided by that, rounded up. The chart and the product calculator are printed beside that count.
How does York’s own calculator count rolls?
The product-page calculator takes the wall width and height in feet and any openings. It rounds the height up to whole repeats, adds no trim, divides the total width by the roll width for the strips, removes one strip for every roll width an opening spans, and divides strips by the whole strips in 33 feet. For 36 feet of wall at 8 feet on a 20.9-inch roll it returns 6 rolls: 21 strips at 4 per roll.
How many bolts for 300 square feet?
By York’s area rule, 300 divided by 56 is 5.36, which the chart rounds to 5 and a cautious buyer to 6. Three hundred square feet at 8 feet is 37½ feet of wall, 22 drops of 20.5 inches; at 4 cuts per bolt that is 6 bolts, at 3 cuts with a trim allowance 8. The area rule does not know how many drops the walls take, which is why the two figures differ.
How many for a 12 by 12 room?
The chart says 7 bolts at 8 or 9 feet. Each 12-foot wall takes 8 drops of 20.5 inches, 32 in all. At 8 feet with no trim a bolt holds 4 cuts, 8 bolts; with a 4-inch trim it holds 3, 11 bolts. York’s product calculator takes the 48 feet as one run, 28 strips of 20.9 inches, and returns 7 rolls at 8 feet and 10 at 9.
What is the square-foot rule and where does it break?
One bolt is 56 square feet, 20.5 inches by 33 feet; the products read cover about 57.5. Perimeter times height divided by 56 is the chart’s basis, rounded to the nearest bolt, so 5.14 becomes 5. The rule breaks wherever the last drop of a wall is narrower than a roll width or the last cut on a bolt is shorter than a wall: paper that is bought but cannot become a drop.
What does the repeat change?
Pick the Liora product and the 20.87-inch straight repeat loads. An 8-foot drop with 4 inches of trim, 100 inches, rounds up to 104.35, five repeats; a bolt still holds three. At 9 feet the drop becomes 125.22 inches, six repeats, three per bolt again. York’s calculator rounds the same way but without the trim, so its strip of 104.35 inches is the same length as this page’s cut on that product.
Is the chart available as a PDF?
York links a Wallpaper Roll Estimation PDF from its calculator page; it carries the same 17 rooms. This page’s table adds, for each of those rooms and both ceilings, the area quotient the chart rounds, the bolts the drops need and the bolts with the trim entered, and it prints with the rest of the plan.
Can I enter inches, or feet and inches?
Yes. Wall fields take 96, 8 ft, 8′0″ or 8 ft 6 in; the metric toggle converts to millimetres. York’s product calculator takes whole feet only, and the chart lists whole-foot rooms, which is why the chart line reads “room not on the chart” when a wall is 10½ feet.
Is it free, and is it York’s?
Free, and not York’s. Calculiva has no affiliation with York Wallcoverings. The chart, the bolt, the two product formats and prices and the calculator rule were read from yorkwallcoverings.com on the date in the byline and leave this page three months later unless re-read.
Is there an app?
No. The page runs in the browser, prints with the chart table, drop list and bolt sheet, and exports the drops as CSV and the wall drawing as SVG. Nothing is stored; York’s own calculator, by contrast, keeps the openings you add in the browser and applies them on the next product page until removed.
Which figure should I order from?
The drop count with a trim allowance is the paper the walls consume; the chart and the product calculator are what York publishes and are printed so the difference is visible. Where the three agree, order that. Where they do not, the warning names the reason, usually the trim York does not add or a room whose walls do not divide into whole roll widths.
What about paper from another maker?
Any roll with a stated width and length, with doors and windows placed on the wall, is planned on the general calculator. This page is fixed to York’s 33-foot bolt and its two product widths, and applies openings only to York’s two published rules.
What the bolt count does not decide
- Rectangular walls; the chart lookup takes walls 1 and 2 as the room’s sides in whole feet and the tallest wall as the ceiling, 8 or 9 feet.
- Openings are applied to York’s two rules and not to the drop plan; corner offcuts are not reused on the next wall.
- The trim allowance and the opening width are working values, not York figures; York’s chart and calculator add no trim.
- Prices are list prices of two products on the date read, before shipping or tax; they leave this page three months later.
