Why 105 square feet can use 110 tiles

The example is a 126 × 120-inch rectangle with a 12-inch square installed module and no setbacks. Ten complete columns cover 120 inches. A remaining six-inch strip needs ten more source tiles: 110 tiles, including ten cuts. Their combined cut-off area is five square feet.

Choose whole modules instead and the footprint becomes 120 × 120 inches: 100 tiles covering 100 square feet. Five square feet remain uncovered. Centering that footprint divides the six-inch remainder into three inches at either side; it does not add material.

Three different kinds of extra material

With cutting enabled, the sample five-percent reserve rounds up to six tiles. The requirement is then 116. Ten tiles per box means 12 boxes containing 120 tiles, with four more from carton rounding. The six reserves, four packaging extras and five square feet of cut-offs are separate quantities.

Setbacks and leftovers have different origins

Suppose the outside rectangle is 132 inches square. Enter two inches on the left, four on the right, three at the top and nine at the bottom. The usable field becomes 126 × 120 inches, exactly the first example. Those intentionally exaggerated clearances illustrate the arithmetic; they are not recommended installation gaps.

Cutting fills that field while leaving the four specified setbacks. Whole modules leave another six inches across its width. With centering enabled, the final distances from the outer boundary become five inches on the left, seven on the right, three at the top and nine at the bottom. The model adds the leftover to the setback rather than replacing the setback with it.

Turn a rectangle before committing to cuts

A small 30 × 36-inch test area illustrates orientation using a 12 × 24-inch module. Without cuts, the original orientation fits two modules; rotating them fits three. That is four versus six square feet of coverage inside the same seven-and-a-half-square-foot boundary. With cutting allowed, either orientation uses six source tiles.

Use the comparison buttons to make that choice explicit. A lower purchase count can simply mean less of the area is tiled. Inspect uncovered area alongside boxes, especially when the remaining strip is beside a door or a walking route.

Read the underside before the saw line

The NewTechWood installation guide advises checking the screws beneath a proposed cut and preserving connections at finished edges. This planner cannot see those details. It lists geometrically fitting rectangles without promising reusable offcuts or a valid interlock after trimming.

Measure the installed repeat

Connected tiles advance by their installed module size. Decorative slats, tabs and the visible face can have different dimensions. For a package-based estimate, consult the exact product information; IKEA’s measuring guide also distinguishes the measured area from the packs required for its shape.

Deck tile questions

How do square feet turn into a deck-tile order?

Area is a useful first check, but a partial row may need a source tile at every position. The plan counts those positions before adding your reserve and rounding to boxes. The uncovered-area figure shows what a whole-only arrangement leaves outside its footprint.

Is the deck tile calculator free to use?

Yes. You can change measurements, compare all four alternatives and export the schedule without an account. There is no quote form between entering dimensions and seeing the quantities.

Can I enter a balcony in metres?

Select metric, or enter a suffix such as 3.2 m in a dimension field. Existing lengths convert when you switch systems. Area results then use square metres while cut dimensions stay in millimetres.

Does this work as a phone-based deck planner?

The controls, layout choices and piece list work in a mobile browser. Tap a tile or a table row for its measurements. Printing and downloading retain the current layout; there is no saved account or automatic project recovery.

What kind of deck tiles can I count here?

Use a rectangular interlocking module on a rectangular footprint. Enter the installed repeat dimensions, not the size of an individual decorative slat. Pedestal-supported pavers and structural deck boards need different support and fixing calculations.

Can I use this for IKEA RUNNEN?

Enter the dimensions and pieces per package for the exact RUNNEN product you intend to buy. The initial ten-piece box is a hypothetical example, not an IKEA preset. The linked IKEA measurement guide explains measuring the area and allowing for its shape.

How do I plan 24 × 24-inch deck tiles?

Set both module dimensions to 24 inches and supply the package quantity. Turning a square module leaves its footprint unchanged. A rectangular module can have a different count when turned; compare those rows before selecting an orientation.

Should I add a grout gap between interlocking tiles?

The dimensions here describe the installed repeat, including the connection geometry. No grout is added. Measure several connected modules or use the manufacturer’s coverage specification; including protruding tabs twice would enlarge the spacing incorrectly.

What goes under interlocking deck tiles?

That depends on the selected system. NewTechWood’s guide calls for a prepared, solid, substantially flat surface. This drawing counts a footprint and cannot evaluate substrate condition, drainage or support; establish those before using its material estimate.

Can the plan be used over an existing wood deck?

It can measure that rectangle, but it does not assess the wood beneath it. A tile covering does not repair decay, loose boards or inadequate support. Confirm the existing deck and the tile manufacturer’s substrate requirements separately.

What are the drawbacks of choosing only whole tiles?

You avoid planned perimeter cuts but leave a smaller tiled footprint. A narrow residual strip can be visually awkward, and a raised exposed edge may need a compatible transition. The border readout makes the space visible; it does not design the transition.

How does a concrete patio affect this estimate?

Enter the usable rectangle and the required setbacks at each boundary. Cracks, uneven levels, water flow and door clearance do not appear in a two-dimensional count. Resolve those site conditions using the product instructions before choosing the finished footprint.

What this footprint leaves out

  • Rectangular areas and modules only. Columns, drains, notches, rounded boundaries and changes in level need their own measured details.
  • No engineered support, pedestal spacing, roof loading, water-flow or substrate assessment.
  • Cut pieces consume individual source tiles. Kerf, screw locations, slat patterns and interlock compatibility are not modeled.
  • No universal waste percentage, expansion clearance or connector multiplier. Setbacks and reserve are supplied by you.
  • Price covers tile boxes only. Matching ramps, fascia, corners, delivery, tax and labour are excluded.
