Four choices, one ceiling
Alternatives are calculated before fixture reservations. Choosing one clears the old reservations because their locations change. The goal column checks your minimum border, not installation compliance.

Adjusted dimensions subtract your deduction along trimmed sides only. Fixture cells retain their CSV locations but contribute no panel to the order.

The orientation changes the order
Take the sample 120 × 144-inch ceiling and a 24 × 48-inch module. Five modules fit across and three along: 15 complete panels. Six panels per carton means three cartons and three spare pieces from packaging alone. No percentage allowance was needed to create that surplus.
Turn the module through 90 degrees. The equal-border layout now has three columns and six rows: 18 panel blanks, of which twelve are cut at the two sides. Both orientations still cover 120 square feet. The carton count happens to stay at three, but the number of cuts and the spare pieces do not.
Centering a remainder
With a 100-inch span and a 24-inch module, a corner start leaves a four-inch strip after four full modules. Centering five modules instead gives 14-inch borders at both ends and three full modules between them. This uses the same five blanks across the span while changing the edge proportions.
Make the deduction explicit
A nominal grid dimension is a planning reference. The cut that fits a real opening can depend on the panel edge and installation detail. The deduction input records your measured adjustment instead of hiding one in the formula. For example, subtracting ⅛ inch from a 14-inch trimmed width gives 13⅞ inches; an untrimmed dimension is left alone. This is arithmetic, not a universal fitting instruction.
Kanopi’s border guide distinguishes ordinary, scored and reveal-edge panels. A decorative score can change the visual border even when the physical module stays the same. This tool does not place decorative scores or cut the depth of a reveal.
Reserve a module, not a round hole
A full-module light can replace the panel at that cell. A small downlight hole still leaves a panel around it, so removing the whole cell would undercount material. The reservation mode therefore accepts complete cells only. Its cross marks a purchasing exclusion, not permission to hang a fixture from a tile. Check the manufacturer’s lighting instructions for the selected system.
Keep panel and grid purchases distinct

Can I use the ceiling planner without paying?
The comparison, drawing and CSV are available without registration. The estimate stays in this browser. Save the CSV or print the page to keep a record before you close it.
Why is dividing square feet by tile area not enough?
That division ignores the pieces cut at the perimeter. Turning a rectangular panel can change how many blanks meet the walls, even when the room area stays fixed. The alternative table makes this difference visible before you choose a layout.
Does this replace Armstrong’s ceiling grid calculator?
It covers panel layout and purchasing only. Armstrong’s tool also estimates its suspension products and handles room shapes beyond a rectangle. Use a system-specific grid plan for the main beams, tees, hangers and perimeter components.
Can I reserve light panels from my phone?
Switch the drawing action to Reserve fixture cells, then tap an uncut cell. Tap it again to restore its ceiling panel. Only complete cells are accepted. Changing the room or grid layout clears reservations because the old cell locations no longer describe that layout.
Can this estimate a glued ceiling?
This page treats a suspended ceiling as repeating nominal modules. Overlapping glue-up edges and installation strips change coverage in a different way. Do not enter the outer dimensions of an overlapping product and assume this count models its effective coverage.
Can I calculate ceiling tiles in square metres?
Use the metric switch or type a dimension with a suffix such as 3.6 m. The switch converts existing measurements and area labels. It does not reinterpret a 24-inch module as a 24-millimetre panel.
Why can my count differ from USG’s estimator?
The inspected USG tool reports approximate panel and grid quantities from area. This planner counts each clipped panel blank, then removes reserved full-module fixtures and rounds your chosen carton size. Differences can therefore come from borders, reservations or packaging rather than the area.
What does the ceiling price estimate include?
Only the panel cartons at the price you enter. It excludes the suspension system, lighting, delivery, tax, labour and tools. Zero means no price has been supplied; it is not a claim that a supplier provides free panels.
How much clearance is needed above a drop ceiling?
This plan has no vertical dimension and cannot determine that clearance. Check the selected panel, grid and fixture instructions together, including space to insert and remove panels. The horizontal cut deduction field does not specify the ceiling drop.
Are the border dimensions ready to cut?
They begin as nominal plan dimensions. If your measured opening and product instructions call for a deduction, enter it explicitly; it is applied only along a trimmed dimension. Verify the actual border opening before cutting a batch. The model does not fabricate a reveal or tegular edge.
Should a round light hole remove a whole ceiling tile?
No. A small penetration still needs the surrounding panel. Fixture reservation here is only for a fitting that replaces an entire module. Leave the panel in the count for a round hole and plan that local cut separately.
Boundaries of this plan
- One rectangular room, rectangular nominal modules and straight grid lines. No sloped, stepped, curved or irregular ceilings.
- Plain cuttable panels. No decorative-pattern alignment, proprietary edge fabrication, grid-flange fitting or structural support calculations.
- One source blank per displayed panel, without combining border offcuts. A deduction changes the listed rectangular cut dimensions, not the module spacing.
- Fixtures reserve complete cells only. No round penetrations, partial-cell openings, fixture loading or electrical design.
- Changing room size, module size, orientation or start position clears fixture reservations. Price and reserve changes preserve them.
