Driveway cost calculator.

One measured surface, every bid divided by it, the missing lines in plain sight.

PROJECT COSTS / 001Zones · sq ft · bids · lines · base depth

Contractors price a drive by its square feet, yet each one measures it their own way and folds different work into the total. Measure it once here, in zones, then type two or three bids: each is divided by the area it covers and by the area you measured, every line one bid prices and another skips is flagged, a paver bid’s base and sand are read against the ICPI guide, and the bid you favor is placed in what US owners reported spending.

Dollar fields start empty because Calculiva prints no driveway price. An empty line means the bid is silent about it; 0 means the bid says it is included. Leave the area covered empty when the bid prices the whole drive you measured.

Two columns divide the same all-in figure. The first uses the area the contractor wrote on the bid, which is the rate the bid really charges. The second uses your measurement, which is what you will pay per square foot of the drive you actually have. When the two disagree, one of you measured a different drive, and that question comes before price.

What owners reported spending on driveways and walkways

The Census Bureau files driveways and walkways as one job type, so a garden path relaid by hand and a new two-car drive with a curb cut share these rows. Each figure is what a household remembered spending on the project over the two years before its 2023 interview. Nationally 1,325 projects were sampled and 29.8 percent were owner jobs, which usually leave labor out; the South had the lowest median at $2,400 and the Northeast the highest at $3,500. No size is recorded, so these numbers frame a budget and never yield a rate per square foot.

The quartiles were computed from the public use file with the household weights, and a region is shown only when at least 30 projects were sampled; every region here has at least 280. Costs on the public file are rounded and capped at the top, so the upper quartile understates the largest jobs. Fencing and walls is the next job type in the same lot and yard group; Calculiva sets chain link fence quotes against that row the same way.

Paver driveways: the layers ICPI Tech Spec 10 sets

ICPI Tech Spec 10, Application Guide for Interlocking Concrete Pavements, revised March 2022, read on 2026-10-13
LayerGuide valueMetric
Compacted aggregate base, driveway (minimum)6 to 8 in150 to 200 mm
Compacted aggregate base, walk (minimum)4 to 6 in100 to 150 mm
Bedding sand, screeded, uncompacted1 to 1 1/2 in25 to 40 mm
Paver thickness for residential driveways2 3/8 in60 mm

The guide calls the base figures minimums and says they may be greater with site conditions, freezing temperatures and traffic, with review by a qualified design professional. So a paver bid that states less than 6 inches of base under a drive is flagged, and one that states more is not: deeper can be the right answer on wet or frost-prone ground. Sand works the other way. The guide wants a consistent screeded layer and warns against using it to fill low spots in the base, so a bid that plans more than 1 1/2 inches of sand is flagged too.

Nothing in that guide gives a base depth for asphalt or poured concrete. It only says a base used under asphalt can typically be used under pavers. A depth stated on an asphalt or concrete bid is therefore kept in your notes and not judged, and the page holds no volume or weight of stone for any material.

The worked drive: 400 plus 92 square feet

The preset is the 20 by 20 foot pad that people search for, with a flare added at the street so the drawing shows how a second zone joins the first. The flare dimensions are an example, not a norm: 20 feet wide where it meets the pad, 26 feet at the curb, 4 feet deep. A trapezoid’s area is the average of its two parallel sides times the distance between them, (20 + 26) ÷ 2 × 4 = 92 square feet. With the pad’s 400, the drive measures 492 square feet.

That total is the divisor for every bid. On this drive a bid of $1,000 more than another costs $2.03 more per square foot, and a ten-cent gap in rate is $49 on the total.

Length is half of the question

Questions about a 40-foot or a 200-foot drive cannot be answered from length alone, because no width comes with them and no published source gives a standard one. Multiply instead: a run of L feet gains L square feet for every foot it widens. Measure the width where cars actually drive, at both ends and in the middle if it varies, and enter the run as a rectangle at the average.

Turnarounds and parking bulbs are drawn as half circles, π × diameter² ÷ 8. A turnaround 20 feet across adds 157.1 square feet. Odd shapes that a plat or a contractor has already measured go in as a known area.

Five lines that change a total, not the paving

Breaking out and hauling away an old drive, digging and building the base, setting edging or curbs, adding drainage, and pulling a permit or rebuilding the sidewalk apron each have a field on every bid. Most of them depend on the site more than on the surface you choose. Compare paving columns when the bids state the same lines; compare all-in columns when they do not. The spread in the result panel runs from the lowest all-in rate to the highest.

When a bid gives both a total and a rate that do not multiply out over its area, the total is kept and the gap is printed, since one of the two is not the price you will sign.

Where the numbers come from

The survey figures were computed from the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Housing Survey public use file. The paver layers were read on 2026-10-13 in Tech Spec 10, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute’s application guide, in the March 2022 revision hosted by the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association. The five pages ranking first for this search were read on 11 October 2026 and checked again on 13 October: none cites the American Housing Survey or ICPI, none gives a bedding sand thickness, and none ties a base depth to a published standard. Rounding and units are covered in how Calculiva calculates.

Driveway cost questions, answered from your measurement

How much would a 20x20 driveway cost?

A 20 by 20 foot pad is 400 square feet, so every dollar per square foot separating two bids is $400 on the total. No public source prices a drive of that size. The 2023 American Housing Survey records what owners spent on a driveway or walkway project without its size: a national median of $2,900, half of the projects between $1,000 and $6,000. Put your bids against those numbers here.

How much does a 40 ft driveway cost?

Forty feet is only one side of the area that bids are priced on. Each foot of width along a 40-foot run adds 40 square feet, and a flare where the drive meets the street adds its own trapezoid. Measure the width at a few points, enter the run and the flare as two zones, and divide each bid by the total.

How much would a 200 ft asphalt driveway cost?

Each foot of width on a 200-foot run is 200 square feet, which is why small rate gaps grow on long drives: ten cents a square foot between two asphalt bids is $20 for every foot of width. Check that every bid on a run that long states its base work and its drainage as lines, since those are the ones a short bid tends to leave out.

How much would a 1000 ft driveway cost?

A thousand feet of drive holds 1,000 square feet per foot of width, far outside what most survey projects describe: the national 75th percentile of reported driveway or walkway spending was $6,000, all sizes together. At that length the useful figure is the price per square foot of each bid, entered on the same measured area, with the base and drainage lines stated.

What does a 1,500 sq ft asphalt driveway cost?

Type 1,500 in a known-area zone and set the bid material to asphalt. At that size each dollar per square foot between two bids is $1,500. Calculiva publishes no asphalt rate, so the figures come from the bids you hold; the calculator lines them up per square foot and places the one you lean toward in the survey quartiles of your region.

What is a fair driveway cost per square foot?

The one worth comparing is the all-in figure: the bid total with removal, base, edging, drainage and permit lines added, divided by the area it covers. A rate printed on a bid may cover the paving alone. No federal survey publishes a driveway price per square foot, because the household survey that records spending does not record the size of the job.

How do I work out concrete driveway cost per sq ft?

Divide the bid total, every stated line included, by the square feet the bid says it pours, then by the area you measured. If the two differ by more than rounding, the warning shows both. Concrete is priced here by the square foot of drive only; volume, mix and slab thickness are outside this page.

Can this work as a concrete driveway cost calculator?

For comparing bids, yes: choose concrete as the material of each bid and type its total or its rate. The page holds no published base or slab thickness for poured concrete. The one guide read for this page covers interlocking pavers, so a concrete bid is compared on price and on the lines it states, not on its build-up.

Does it work as an asphalt driveway cost calculator?

It compares asphalt bids by the square foot and flags the lines one of them omits. It does not price asphalt by weight: no tonnage is computed and no asphalt base depth is checked, because the paver guide it reads says that a base built for asphalt can usually sit under pavers but gives no asphalt figure of its own.

Asphalt or concrete: how do I compare the two bids?

Enter one bid of each over the same measured zones. The calculator sets their prices per square foot side by side, adds the lines each states, and says when one is silent on removal or base work. It does not rank surfaces by lifespan or upkeep; no source read for this page measured those, so that choice stays yours.

Is there a gravel driveway cost calculator here?

Gravel is one of the materials a bid can name, and the area, the missing lines and the survey position work the same way. The stone itself is not counted: no depth, cubic yard or ton figure is computed on this page. A gravel bid that leaves out edging or base preparation is flagged when another bid states them.

How do I get a driveway estimate near me?

Ask local contractors to price the same measured area and the same five lines, then type their bids here. The survey gives a regional frame, not a local price: owners reported a median of $3,500 in the Northeast, $3,000 in the West, $2,500 in the Midwest and $2,400 in the South for a driveway or walkway project.

What this comparison leaves out

  • Calculiva publishes no driveway price: no rate per square foot, no material price, no labor rate. Every dollar in the comparison is from your bids.
  • Areas are flat plan areas from the sizes you type. Slope, thickened edges and the curb cut itself are not added.
  • The same rate can buy different drives: thickness, mix, reinforcement, paver brand and warranty are not compared.
  • No quantity of stone, sand, asphalt or concrete is computed, in cubic yards, tons or any other unit.
  • The ICPI check applies to paver bids only and reads the driveway base minimum and the sand range; it is not a design, and site conditions can call for more.
  • Survey figures are self-reported, combine driveways and walkways, include owner jobs that usually exclude labor, describe projects from 2021 to 2023, carry no size, and are capped at the top on the public file.
