This calculator lays all three from the dimensions you enter, pairs edge cuts on shared modules, counts knife cuts and cutting length, rounds tiles to sets and totals the delivery weight.

Turning the mat changes which edge is cut and whether two cut pieces come out of one mat. The calculator keeps the orientation with fewer mats, then fewer cuts, then less cutting length, and shows the other one for comparison.

Thirteen mats, not twelve and a half
The example bay is 20 by 15 feet, 300 square feet. Dividing by a 4-by-6-foot mat gives 12.5, which the area-only tools round to 13. The grid says how. Laid with the 4-foot side across the 20-foot width, five mats fit exactly; along the 15-foot length two rows of 6 feet leave a 3-foot band. Those five 4-by-3 pieces come from three mats, since two fit side by side in one 6-foot mat with a single cut: 13 mats, 3 cuts, 12 feet of cutting, 312 square feet bought, 4 percent over the room.
Laid the other way, four columns of 6 feet leave a 2-foot strip and four rows of 4 feet leave a 3-foot strip: 16 pieces, seven of them cut, 15 mats. The area-only answer happened to match the better orientation and said nothing about the worse one.
Tiles lose an inch to the interlock
A 24-inch interlocking tile with a 1-inch interlock loss covers 23 inches of pitch. On the same bay that is 11 columns and 8 rows, 88 pieces, and after pairing the 10-inch edge pieces on shared tiles the layout consumes 85 tiles. Sold in sets of four, the purchase is 88. Dividing the room by the nominal 4 square feet would have said 75, which is 13 tiles short of the grid. As an island the same grid needs 34 straight-edge pieces and 4 corners.
Rolls trade cuts for seams
A 4-foot roll 25 feet long covers the bay in four strips of 20 feet, the last one ripped to 3 feet: four rolls, five cuts, 60 feet of seam, 400 square feet bought for 300 laid. The strip arithmetic is the same continuous-strip rule the site uses for laminate underlay; a room longer than the roll is reported as unavailable rather than spliced.

GrytFit draws a real layout for its own products and counts edge pieces; MuscleSquad pairs opposite-edge offcuts for three metric tile sizes. Neither prints a cut length or a weight, and neither takes a product it does not sell. The area-only tools divide and round.
Weight is a quantity too
Rubber is dense. The example mats weigh 100 pounds each, so 13 of them are 1,300 pounds on the truck; the 88 tiles at 8 pounds are 704; four 200-pound rolls are 800. Enter the listing's weight per unit and the ledger totals it for the purchased quantity, which is the number a freight quote and a staircase both care about. Questions before the pallet arrives
How does the calculator turn square feet into mats?
It does not divide the area. The room is laid as a grid of the mat you enter, in both orientations, and the cut pieces at the edges are assigned to source mats, two per mat when their cut widths fit side by side. The mat count is the number of sources, and the area-only figure is printed beside it for comparison.
How many tiles do I need?
Enter the nominal size and the interlock loss from the product page. Tiles are laid at the effective pitch, so a 24-inch tile with a 1-inch loss covers 23 inches, and the count rises accordingly. The result is then rounded up to whole sets if the product ships in sets.
Why can a 10-by-10 area need more than 25 two-foot tiles?
Because the interlocking edges overlap. At 23 inches of effective pitch a 120-inch side takes six tiles, so the grid is 36 pieces; pairing the narrow edge pieces on shared tiles brings the purchase to 32 here. A tool that ignores the loss says 25 and comes up short on site.
Which is cheaper to cut, mats, tiles or rolls?
The comparison table prints knife cuts and linear feet of cutting for every format. Thick rubber mats cut slowly, so a layout with three cuts and 12 feet of cutting is a different afternoon from one with sixteen cuts. Prices are yours to multiply; the page carries none.
Can I work in square metres and millimetres?
Switch to metric. Room, mat, tile, interlock and roll dimensions are entered in millimetres, weights in kilograms, and the ledger reports square metres and metres of cutting. The layout arithmetic does not change with the unit.
Does thickness change the quantity?
Not the count: a 10 mm and a 30 mm tile of the same size lay out identically. Thickness changes the weight per piece, which is why the weight field is entered per product rather than assumed, and it changes how long each knife cut takes.
How heavy is the delivery?
Enter the weight per mat, tile or roll from the listing and the ledger totals it for the purchased quantity. Thirteen 100-pound mats are 1,300 pounds on a pallet; the same room in 8-pound tiles is 704 pounds in the example. Freight quotes start from that number.
Do island layouts need different pieces?
Interlocking tiles laid as an island need straight-edge border pieces and corner pieces, otherwise the puzzle edge shows. Choose the island layout and the ledger counts them from the grid: two per side length minus the corners, plus four corners. Wall-to-wall layouts need none.
Is this gym flooring calculator free?
Yes. The layouts, the comparison, the piece list and the CSV are available without an email or a catalog. The preloaded mat, tile and roll are examples taken from listings the audit executed, not products this page sells.
Is there an app version?
The page works in a phone browser at the store. Nothing is saved on a server, so export the CSV or the plan drawing before leaving. Re-enter the product dimensions when the listing changes; the layout is recomputed on every keystroke.
What the grid does not decide
- One rectangle, one product per format, straight grid only. No L-shapes, platforms, brick offsets or diagonal layouts.
- Cut pieces are paired two per module when their cut widths fit; three-piece nesting and reuse of corner offcuts are not attempted.
- Interlock loss, set size and weight are your inputs from the product page; the examples are not recommendations.
- No thickness advice, adhesive, tape, transitions, prices or freight rates.
- Rolls are laid as continuous full-width strips without cross seams.
